"The scruffy suit and hat used by Charlie Chaplin when he first appeared on film in his iconic role of a tramp was sold at auction in Britain on Wednesday.

The black jacket, waistcoat, trousers and bowler hat, donned by the British-born film star in 1914, sold for just 3,565 pounds (5,175 euros, 6,530 dollars) at an auction in Plymouth, southwest England.

It was seen worn by Chaplin for "Kid Auto Races at Venice", an 11-minute silent film which, while rarely viewed, has a secure place in film history thanks to Chaplin's debut as a tramp."

"It was considered to be one of the most outstanding feats in terms of logistics," said David Totheroh, Rollie Totheroh’s grandson.

One of the essential ingredients to the opening sequence was a lot of extras willing to scale the Palisades. The film crew found their answer on the streets of Sacramento.

"They brought in three carloads of hobos from Sacramento," Totheroh said. "They got to spend the day with the king of all tramps — Charlie Chaplin."

The Telegraph of Calcutta, India, is reporting that BBC World Production will debut a series Wednesday on the Discovery Channel titled Great Romances of the 20th Century: "The first episode is on Charlie Chaplin and Oona O’Neil. It traces the comedian’s life from the time he was a young hopeful, enlisting with Fred Karno’s musical troupe. After three disastrous marriages, he met playwright Eugene O’Neil’s daughter in 1943. It feels quite odd to see Chaplin outside his tramp image. The camera follows him through the release of Monsieur Verdoux and Limelight, his voyage to England, and then his triumphant return to Hollywood in 1972 to receive a special Oscar. All through, till his death in 1977, Oona was by his side."
